“The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.” ~ Lamentations 3:25-26
No matter what you are waiting for, waiting is hard. We wait for food at restaurants, we wait to be seen at the doctor’s office, we wait to renew our driver’s license at the motor vehicle department, we wait for people we need to see at work, we wait to rest even at home when the day is done. We wait for almost everything.
How do we wait for God’s deliverance?
Somehow, in all the waiting we never stop doing something. At the restaurant, we converse with friends, at the doctor’s office we read magazines, at the motor vehicle department we catch up on emails, at work we look for another project, at home we watch television. When is the last time you remember sitting, staring and thinking for more than 5 minutes without doing ANYTHING? No checking Facebook, no texting, no reading, no anything.
In our spirits, we distract ourselves with life. If we keep ourselves busy with something else, we don’t have to think about the waiting. If we keep our spirits distracted with life, we don’t have to rely on God.
There are things in our relationship with God that can only happen in our waiting. It takes more faith to truly wait than to act. The deepest level of waiting cannot be broken by activity. It is in this deepest waiting that we learn what it is to trust God and begin to love Him for who He is rather than what He does.
So wait. Trust. Be still. Spend some time with God. Get rid of the distractions. Live in the storm without letting the storm live in you. If the writer of Lamentations could wait and hope in the Lord as his entire world was shattered by the Babylonians, then you can do the same.
