Nothing to Something

Am I smart enough, kind enough, outgoing enough, educated enough, rich enough, successful enough, good enough? AM I ENOUGH? Why can’t I get things right? Why can’t I become who God wants me to be? Why can’t God use me?

Each one of these questions becomes a stone around our hearts, sinking us. We constantly try to be enough. But why? I have news for you: you DO NOT have to be enough.

God rarely (if ever) uses the best equipped people to accomplish His will. Jacob was a liar. Moses was shy. Gideon was afraid. Rahab was a prostitute. David was a murderer. Peter was a deserter. Paul was too religious, Lazarus was DEAD.

What do all of these stories have in common? The word “was”. Each of these people let God use them, even in their nothingness, and He made them something. These men and women went from completely incapable nothingness to become some of the greatest heroes of Christianity.

Take a minute and look back at that list of people God used. I don’t know where you’re at, or what you’re dealing with. You might be a liar, or a murderer, or a deserter. But I do know one thing. If you’re reading this, you’re not dead. God brought Lazarus back from the dead to use Him. He can bring you back from your failure too.

All we have to do is let God transform us. He doesn’t want our pretense of perfection, He wants our brokenness, our deadness. He wants to take our nothingness and create something magnificent.

God created the world out of nothing, and as long as we are nothing, He can make something out of us. ~ Martin Luther
